UK National Lottery Operator Fined £100,000 For Wrong Jackpot Sum

Now this is one you don’t hear every day — people obviously complain when their numbers don’t come up in the lotto, but what about if the lottery operator’s numbers don’t add up?

That’s precisely what happened in October 2013, when 3 winning ticketholders were misinformed as to the amount they had won in the UK’s National Lottery.

How does that happen?

Camelot, the lottery’s operator, had originally stated the jackpot was £6.2 million, but after noticing a calculation error, that big jackpot number was revised to £4.8 million.

Of course, this only came after the draw, meaning that the unlucky lucky winners found they’d won much less than they’d initially banked on.

Cut to August 2014, and the British Gambling Commission (one of the organizations involved in the regulation of the British gambling industry) has slapped Camelot with a £100,000 fine, and has said they will be keeping the operator under strict supervision for the foreseeable future so that there is no repeat of the previous embarrassment.

Was it human error?

It turns out that the mistake came as a result of a technical issue, but it was due to an oversight by Camelot that this error was let through in the first place.

To be fair, though, Camelot have acknowledged that they were at fault and have cooperated with the Commission. The same can’t be said for other, less salubrious outfits.

You Mean Unibet?

Of course we mean Unibet. We’ve covered their sloppy customer service in great depth before, as well as their unwillingness to pay out legitimate wins to customers.

There’s an entire cottage industry that seems to have grown up around reporting problems with this outfit, so we won’t give them any more airtime than we have to.

Suffice to say, when looking for an online casino, make sure they’re reputable, upstanding members of the industry.

We vet all our casinos so you can play safely, so take your pick from our list, visit their site, open an account, and get spinning!
