We have all seen funny videos on the internet with members of various parliaments either caught sleeping, reading newspapers or even fighting each other.
A new trend seems to be them using smartphones and tablets for playing video games or spending time in online casinos and on poker sites.
The most recent scandal comes from France, where photographers caught several parliament members engaging in different extracurricular activities. Here’s an example of the activities the French MPs pursued during a session of parliament: ordering wine and clothes from online stores, reading adult comics (very French-like if you remember “Emmanuelle”) and playing poker online.
In the old days, they at least had the decency to try and hide their newspaper in the middle of a pile of papers, which remotely resembled official documents. Today, nobody is ashamed of using their iPad to sling a few angry birds at poor unsuspecting pigs instead of listening to another boring legislative debate.
The French parliament has not yet considered banning the use of tablets, but in the UK a similar ban had been enforced for a brief period of time. The ban has been lifted though, since that way the multi-tasking MPs are more likely to show up and listen to the debates of their peers.
While the politicians themselves like to use electronic devices to have fun during work, they are currently considering a ban on tablets in schools, claiming that tablets are obstructing the learning process by keeping children from doing their work.
