Video poker first came up in the mid-1970s when it became technically possible. It proved to be a very popular idea, as playing this different version of poker at a machine seemed to be a lot less intimidating than playing the actual table game. It was an immediate hit with casino crowds, and it soon spread worldwide as well. Today video poker is a part of any good range of games an online casino has got in its collection.
The game became part of the basic selection of casinos with 1979's introduction of SIRCOMA's Draw Poker machine. SIRCOMA went on to develop into IGT, one of the bigger game developers at the time, which means that it's got a solid place in the history of modern gambling.
Video poker machines are often compared to slots. Both are games of chance, but video poker is actually very different. It's simple enough, which is probably the reason why the two are compared to each other a lot. Players press the Deal button, which makes 5 cards out of a deck of 52 (53 in some cases) appear that is shuffled constantly by a random-number generator in the background. They then decide if they want to keep their hand or discard it. A second push of the Deal button brings up cards in place of the ones players decided to give up. After the second deal is complete, you collect any wins you've gained, and the game starts again.
The hands aren't related, the RNG takes good care of that. Still, as the odds are predictable and you'll know how likely a particular hand is, the game is a lot more predictable than a slot machine, the combinations of which are much more difficult to anticipate. This means that the video poker machine yields a much better long-term payout percentage.
