Online poker has been a big hit with players around the world right from its beginning. The game is reaching a bigger audience than ever today and one of the most important games for
online gambling venues. Traditionally a game with many variants, playing the game online has opened new ways of presenting and designing it. It's become a massive event, but to keep up with the news, you don't need to do the sorting and sifting yourself – visit us every now and then, we've got all the hottest updates.
The origins of traditional poker are difficult to trace. First reports came from Louisiana and generally cities and states along the Mississippi. The English deck was introduced by 1950, and the game adapted. Though the American Gold Rush helped to make the game known, what really boosted its popularity was the American Civil War. The first recorded variations of the game go back to that time. These increased over the decades that followed, and the game became a favorite pastime to Americans.
The 1970s were an important decade for the game.
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) began and produced its first legends, the game was analyzed, and books both on its nature and strategies were published. By the 1980s poker had a place in popular culture, famously even became part of the Star Trek saga, which suggested that it would still be played centuries from now. With states treating gambling more liberally, the game eventually spread across the US in the 1990s.
Over the last 10 to 15 years the popularity of the game has exploded. The Internet made it accessible to a crowd that today plays it from the comfort of their own homes, and WSOP has turned into a sporting event that people want to watch on TV. The possibilities of new technology have made new variants and designs of the game possible that attract an ever bigger audience.
