Gin rummy, sometimes simply called Gin, is a card game for two players. It's played with a standard deck of 52 cards.
The game was invented in 1909 by Elwood and Graham Baker. There are several variations of the game, including Single Match Gin, Straight Gin, Oklahoma Gin and Hollywood Gin. Several of the variants are not an actual change of the game's rules, but a different take on scoring. The game is usually played to 100 points, but that can vary with the game.
Much like its predecessor and main influence rummy,
the game is about matching cards into what's called melds. A meld can consist of sets and runs. Sets are 3 or 4 cards of matching rank, runs are sequences of 3 or more cards of the same suit. The cards are ranked from high to low, with the king leading and the ace being the card with the smallest value. Aces can only make the lower end of a run, not start one above the king.
Any card not in a set or a run (i.e. any card not in a meld) is called deadwood. Deadwood points are counted against the player who ends a round by knocking or declaring Gin or Big Gin. Players can knock only if they hold a total deadwood count of 10 or less. Deadwood is scored at 10 for each face card, 1 for the ace and the numerical value of all others.
A round ends in a draw if there are only two cards left on the stock pile. Dealership changes with every round, the player not dealing begins a round.
The game is essentially a much faster-paced version of rummy and a very popular pastime all around the world. For people looking to play Gin Rummy online, it's usually featured in the
Other and Variety sections.
