Keno is a game comparable to different lotteries and versions of bingo. Out of 80 numbered balls jumbled around in a glass container called the “bubble”, 20 balls are drawn, verified and the results announced. Nowadays a computer then calculates wagers and wins. Players place their wagers on numbers on a ticket with 80 numbered checkboxes (1 to 80). They mark the numbers they want to wager on by writing an S on them.
The 20 balls are then drawn at random, and the more numbers market on a player's ticket are called, the bigger their win is.
The game differs from a traditional lottery mainly in that each casino sets up its own paytable. The winnings are then calculated according to the paytable, allowing for a wide range of possible house edges. They can be set anywhere from below 4 to well over 35%, although the typical house edge for games other than slot machines is between 0 and 5%. A single casino isn't reduced to a single paytable either, there usually are several different ones available on different keno tickets.
To play keno online the design of the game had to be changed slightly. The looks of the kind of keno you find listed in gaming sites' variety sections can vary greatly. Some copy the jumbled balls, others have turned the game into an even table of numbers, from which the player picks a selection and which
a random-number generator then either matches or doesn't.
Keno's name comes from the French and Spanish words for five. It established itself as part of a casino's choice of games in the second half of the 1800s and was first documented in Houston in the US in 1866. At that point it was an already very successful game. It was brought to the States by Chinese workers earlier in that century. The first name it went by was puck-apu, a corruption of its original Chinese name. It's very old, dating back to before 200 BC.
