In August, Phil Ivey had a really impressive session of Punto Banco at London’s oldest casino, Crockfords. It all started with Ivey wiring £1 million to the club to play Punto Banco, a version of Baccarat preferred by true high rollers.
At first, he lost half a million placing ÂŁ50,000 bets per hand. Later, he increased his bets to ÂŁ150,000 and managed to end the first session with ÂŁ2.3 million. Coming back the next day the poker legend really turned the heat on, as he finished his two-day super high roller gambling spree with ÂŁ7.1 million.
However, when Ivey asked the casino personnel to wire his winnings back to his account the casino refused, saying that an internal inquiry is needed first. So far, Crockfords representatives have not revealed what exactly they are investigating and why the money is being withheld.
“Daily Mail” has speculated that the case might have something to do with a beautiful Asian woman, who was with Ivey during the Punto Banco sessions and who had also received several bans from other London casinos.
This week, CNN reported the incident and stated that the British Gambling Commission is now also involved.
Phil Ivey, who has won $17.5 million at poker tournaments and several more million from high stake cash games, has so far avoided speaking to the press on the specifics of the incident.
